What Are Endangered Animals - Definition
Endangered animals are animals that have so few numbers in existence that they are in danger of becoming extinct throughout all or a substantial percentage of their range. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is the World’s main authority on the conservation status of a specific species. The IUCN categorize animals into one of seven sections which identify the level of threat and danger they are exposed to. Learning these classifications may help you understand what an endangered animal is. There are thousands of endangered animals, some of which have been captured in our high definition video below. What Are Endangered Animals - Category Changes May Occur
 The IUCN use precise criteria to ascertain the conservation status of a specific species and these criteria may evolve and alter as time goes by. In 1994, the IUCN only had one ‘lower risk’ category that included three subcategories (conservation dependent (CD), near threatened (NT) and least concern (LC)), however in 2001 these were altered so that conservation dependent animals were merged into the near threatened section. Near threatened and Least Concern were then made into their own categories. Below provides a clear explanation of the current list used by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
 

  
 


What Are Endangered Animals - Conservation Status
The current list of conservation statuses is as follows (as stated in the IUCN's red list 2006 summary):

Conservation Status:                             Description

Extinct:                                                                No longer in existence / No living members
 Extinct in the Wild:                                             Surviving only in Captivity (confined, such as in a Zoo)
 Critically Endangered:                                        Very High Risk of becoming extinct in the wild
Endangered:                                                        At risk of extinction in the wild
Vulnerable:                                                          In danger in the wild
Near Threatened:                                               Close to becoming endangered in the future
Least Concern:                                                   At low risk / Large numbers in the Wild


The area of geographic distribution, distribution fragmentation and degree of population are three types of criteria that are taken into consideration when classifying conservation status. Population size, environment and habitat changes, predators, poachers and the rate of decline are also key factors. As depicted in the diagram above, the IUCN red list classification of ‘threatened’ includes three categories: Vulnerable, Endangered and Critically Endangered.

  
 


What Are Endangered Animals - Least Concern
The lowest of the IUCNs conservation status is ‘Least Concern’ and the animals that fall into this category are those that are not in any immediate danger of becoming remotely threatened. Examples of animals in the Least Concern category include the Eastern White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus), the Meerkat (Suricata suricatta), the Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) and the American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). There are thousands of animals that fall into the least concern bracket and as such pose no immediate threat of dwindling numbers. What Are Endangered Animals - Near Threatened
The second from lowest of the IUCNs conservation status is 'Near Threatened' and lists animals that could possibly become endangered in the future. Examples of animals in the Near threatened category include the Caucasian Toad (Bufo verrucosissimus), Okapi (Okapia johnstoni), Letter-winged Kite (Elanus scriptus), Beluga Whale (Delphinapterus leucas), Mountain Clouded Yellow Butterfly (Colias phicomone), Ground Beetle (Carabus intricatus), Jaguar (Panthera onca) and Long-tailed Parakeet (Psittacula longicauda). There are thousands of animals that fall into the near threatened bracket and as such we should do all we can to prevent them becoming vulnerable.

 
 


What Are Endangered Animals - Vulnerable
The lowest of the 'threatened' section is 'Vulnerable' and this lists animals that are in danger in the wild. This could be due to harmful human activities, such as habitat destruction or poaching. Examples of animals in the Vulnerable category include the Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), the Giant Tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea), the Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus), the King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), the Sun Bear (Helarctos malayanus), the Victoria Crowned Pigeon (Goura victoria), Blue Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates azureus) and the New Guinea Singing Dog. What Are Endangered Animals - Endangered!
As explained above, the next 'threatened' section is 'Endangered' and lists those animals that are at a real risk of extinction in the wild. There are thousands of Endangered Animals, and some of the more common types include the Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus), African Elephant (Loxodonta africana), Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), Malayan Tapir (Tapirus indicus), Black-footed / African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus), African Hunting Dog (Lycaon pictus), Lion-tailed Macaque (Macaca silenus), Golden Headed Lion Tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysomelas), Golden Lion Tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia) and Lar Gibbon (Hylobates lar). What Are Endangered Animals - Critically Endangered
The highest of the 'threatened' section is 'Critically Endangered' and includes animals that are at extreme risk of extinction in the wild. It is vital that we do all we can to protect and preserve critically endangered animals before they disappear. Animals in this category include the Cotton Top Tamarin (Saguinus oedipus), Columbian Black Spider Monkey (Ateles fusciceps robustus), Blue Eyed Black Lemur (Eulemur flavifrons), Western Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla), White Cheeked Gibbon (Nomascus leucogenys), Rodrigues Fruit Bat (Pteropus rodricensis) and Eastern Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis michaeli). What Are Endangered Animals - Extinct In The Wild
Animals that are extinct in the wild only remain on earth because they are kept and cared for in captivity, such as on farms, in zoos and at other animal saving sanctuaries. The importance of saving, breeding and managing these animals is critical to their existence. Creating mock habitats for them to live in comfortably and mixing healthy males and females with different blood lines may help these animals to survive. Animals in this category include the Black Soft Shell Turtle (Aspideretes nigricans), Scimitar Oryx (Oryx dammah), Seychelles Giant Tortoise (Aldabrachelys hololissa), Socorro Dove (Zenaida graysoni), Barbary lion (Panthera leo leo) and the Wyoming Toad (Anaxyrus baxteri)... (sadly, amongst many more).

  
 


What Are Endangered Animals - Extinct
There are many animals that have become extinct, and we therefore only have historic data, pictures, drawings and bones to remember them with. Famous examples of extinct animals include Dinosaurs, the Saber-toothed Tiger and Woolly Mammoth. However, in the past 100 years we have lost many animals to extinction and these include the Eastern Cougar (Puma concolor couguar) - 2011, Cascade Mountains Wolf (Canis lupus fuscus) - 1940, Pallid Beach Mouse (Peromyscus polionotus decoloratus) -1959, Bali Tiger (Panthera tigris balica) - 1937, Chinese River Dolphin (Lipotes vexillifer) - 2006 and Western Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis longipes) - 2011.
